2010 Competition notice

Art. 1 - PRIZE FOUNDATION
The "Sustainable Architecture" Prize, founded and promoted in 2003 by Fassa S.p.A., registered holder of the trademark “Fassa Bortolo”, and the Architecture Faculty at the University of Ferrara on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its foundation, aims at spreading the concept of a new architecture that is perfectly adjusted to environment, conceived for the necessities of mankind and able to satisfy the needs of these generations without restricting those of the future ones through the indiscriminate exploitation of the resources and the resulting pollution.

Art. 2 – PRIZE
For the section “works realized by professionals” the applications for the Prize can be submitted by individual professionals, or groups of architects and engineers. Each individual candidate or group can take part to the competition with only one project. The project must have been realized and implemented within the past five years.
For the section “projects drawn up for the Degree Thesis” the applications for the Prize can be submitted by individuals or groups that have discussed the Degree Thesis in the last 2 years (therefore not before 31st December 2007) at a Faculty of Architecture or Engineering, as well as in equivalent Educational Institutes, obtaining a mark of not less than 100/110 or equivalent mark.
Lecturers or professors teaching in the current academic year at the Ferrara Faculty of Architecture and Degree Thesis projects disputed at the same Faculty may not take part in the competition.
Works or projects drawn up as degree theses that have already been presented for this Prize in previous years may not be presented again.

Art. 3 – CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATING
For the section “works realized by professionals” the applications for the Prize can be submitted by individual professionals, or groups of architects and engineers. Each individual candidate or group can take part to the competition with only one project. The project must have been realized and implemented within the past five years.
For the section “projects drawn up for the Degree Thesis” the applications for the Prize can be submitted by individuals or groups that have discussed the Degree Thesis in the last 2 years (therefore not before 31st December 2007) at a Faculty of Architecture or Engineering, as well as in equivalent Educational Institutes, obtaining a mark of not less than 100/110 or equivalent mark.
Lecturers or professors teaching in the current academic year at the Ferrara Faculty of Architecture and Degree Thesis projects disputed at the same Faculty may not take part in the competition.
Works or projects drawn up as degree theses that have already been presented for this Prize in previous years may not be presented again.

Art. 4 - APPLICATION PROCEDURE
In order to take part to the competition, the application form on the web site www.premioarchitettura.it must be properly filled in by 31/12/2009.

 



Art. 5 - APPLICATION DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED
The following documents must be submitted for being admitted to the selection of the jury.

 

For the section “works realized by professionals”:
a) a brief curriculum vitae (a text in Italian and English of max. 1,500 characters with spaces, the translation is not included in the calculation of characters) with the picture of the individual candidate or of the group;
b) a data sheet with the specifications of the implemented project (client, authorship of the work, collaborators, intervention chronology);
c) general and technical report describing the intervention (a text in Italian and English of max. 3,000 characters with spaces, the translation is not included in the calculation of characters), focussing on the technical description of the materials used, as well as on the functioning of the work in terms of bioclimate and service systems;
d) description of the work (plans, cross sections, views, project drafts, conceptual schemes, picture of the plastic model if available, rendering images if available, etc.);
e) minimum 5 high-quality pictures of the construction, with the smaller side length of the picture not less than 15 cm.
All the documents indicated above in points a), b), c), d) and e), referred to the section “works realized by professionals”, must be put into 2 tables in vertical A1 format in a free composition and double copy. One copy must be mounted on a rigid and lightweight base in A1 format. Furthermore all the material used for the tables must be submitted in digital format: the texts in Word format (.doc), the separate images and drawings in Jpeg format (.jpg) with a resolution of 300 dpi and a minimum base dimension of 15 cm. At the applicant’s discretion, two paged-up files of the two tables may also be submitted in Jpeg (.jpg) or Pdf (.pdf) format in addition to the above-mentioned single files.

 

For the section “projects drawn up for the Degree Thesis”:
a)

b) a data sheet with the specifications of the project drawn up for the thesis (University, Faculty, supervising professor, assistant supervisor, Academic Year);
c) general and technical report describing the project (a text in Italian and English of max. 3,000 characters with spaces, the translation is not included in the calculation of characters), focussing on the technical description of the material chosen, as well as on the functioning of the work in terms of bioclimate and service systems;
d) description of the work (plans, cross sections, views, project drafts, conceptual schemes, picture of the plastic model if available, rendering images if available, etc.);
e) minimum 5 high-quality rendering images or pictures of the plastic model, with the smaller side length of the image/picture not less than 15 cm.

Art. 6 - SUBMISSION OF THE DOCUMENTATION
The a.m. papers must be submitted in a closed and protected envelope to the Prize Secretariat (c/o the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara, Via Quartieri 8, 44100 Ferrara, Italy) by 31st January 2010.
Candidates will be excluded from the selection of the judging commission, if they do not submit the a.m. papers by the deadline, if they have not the necessary qualifications to participate and if their documentation does not comply with the requirements laid down in the art. 5 of this competition notice.
For deliveries by mail or by courier, the postmark/delivery note departure date will be valid.
The competition announcer cannot bear any possible costs or customs duties for receiving the papers. Therefore the candidates are kindly requested to check all the necessary procedures with the chosen courier, in order to send the papers to the addressee with no charges to be paid by the latter. The competition announcer is therefore exonerated from any responsibilities in the case that the papers are not delivered due to unpaid additional charges.

Art. 7 – JURY
The jury will be made up of:
- a Chairman
- two architects famous in this sector;
- a Prof. Arch. of the Architecture Faculty at the Ferrara University;
- a secretary.
The jury’s decision will be final and irrevocable.

Art. 8 - NOTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS
By May 2010 all the participants will be informed of the results of the selection designating the winner and awarding the special acknowledgments. The awarding report and the reasons for the awarded Prize and Acknowledgements will be also disclosed through the Prize official web site (www.premioarchitettura.it), the web site devoted to the tenth anniversary of the Architecture Faculty of Ferrara (www.xfaf.it), the web site of the company Fassa S.p.A. (www.fassabortolo.com), as well as the specialized press.

Art. 9 – PUBLICATION OF THE PRIZE WINNING WORK
The winning project and those considered noteworthy will be published in a particular issue and/or on a CD devoted to the Prize edition.

Art. 10 – PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION
Upon submitting the necessary documents to be admitted to the competition, candidates for the Prize:
- accept and abide by all the rules laid down by this competition notice;
- accept that the submitted material will not be returned;
- give the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara and Fassa S.p.A., sponsors of the Prize, their permission to use and disclose the contents of the works and of the projects drawn up as degree theses, for publication, whether whole or in part, and also for advertising purposes, the source being quoted, without having any claim to copyright;
- undertake to hold the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara and Fassa S.p.A. harmless from all and any disputes, claims or proceedings related to the contents of the works and of the projects drawn up as degree theses, used and disclosed for publications as indicated in the above point.
The organizing committee of the Prize reserves the right to make any changes to improve the competition and to request some additional documents.
